JAGRITI
Commemoration of International Women's Day
5th March, 2020
The day started off with an inaugural ceremony at 9.30 am in the Thevenet Hall, Jesus and Mary College. The inaugural began with a welcome note by the Convener of WSC, Dr. Maya John. The WSC proceeded to showcase a video documenting all the major events of the WSC for the academic year 2019-20. The inaugural ended on a high note with a play performed by the women’s organization, Center for Struggling Women, and a performance by the students of the Hindi Department. The inaugural ceremony ended with the WSC President, Simran Tom, formally announcing the opening of the various events of Jagriti 2020.
After the inaugural ceremony, we commemorated International Women’s Day through three parallel events: a debate competition, student paper presentations and a quiz. The Jagriti quiz was on the key highlights of the women's movement across the world, and achievements of women in various fields. The Jagriti debate competition was in the format of a Turncoat debate, which was based on various topics that dealt with women's role in the political scenario of the nation, laws and policies with a gender component, and other women-centric issues. The main academic component of Jagriti 2020 was the student seminar in which ten teams from various Delhi University colleges presented papers related to the theme “Women and Democracy”. An online photography competition was also held on the theme “Women in an Ungendered World”.
Winners of the various events were:
Paper Presentations: Aditi Singh, Bidhu Khanna, Swastika Ojha, Yastika Sharma (first prize), Mudita Kushwaha (first prize), Shubhangi Derhgawen (special mention), Devangana Rathore (special mention).
Online Photography Competition: Lekha Negi (first prize), Mohita Jain (second prize), Vijay Kushwaha (third prize)
Jagriti Turncoat Debate Competition: Rishika (first prize), Reema Sharma (second prize).
Jagriti Quiz Competition: Sharon Rebecca Thomas and Ann Maria Renny
The closing program of Jagriti 2020 was the Jansunvai (experience-sharing session), which included short street plays, speeches, songs and poetry by various students, teachers and women's organizations. At the venue of the Jansunvai, WSC put up its own stall in which stationery prepared by the creativity team was on sale. We also had Ms. Meeral from Hiccup put up an information booth on menstrual cups. Last but not the least, in an endeavor to support our own WSC members with entrepreneurial skills, WSC showcased clothes designed and stitched by a Hindi Honors student, Ms. Madhu.
The day celebrated women's day in many creative ways and was indeed a day of reflection and celebration.
