TURNCOAT DEBATE 2020

Topics include women's political  participation, trends in the women's movement, gender-specific laws and policies.

Be prepared to gear up and research for this new experience and compete for PRIZES.

What is Turncoat debate - Each participant will be given an individual topic for which they will have to argue for and against the motion. 

When? - 5th March 2020 (Thursday)
What Time? - 10:30-12:30 PM
Where? - MPH-2, Jesus and Mary college


1. Open to every College and University

2. Topics will be given on 2nd March

3. Each speaker will have to argue each side of the topic for 1:30 minutes

4. A bell will be rung at 1 minute  each time and the again at the 1:30 minute mark. If the participant exceeds the time limit, negative marking will be followed

5. Carry your college ID and/or an identity proof on the day of the quiz.

  by Sarah Grace Yadav Axone, pronounced as ‘Akhuni’ is a 2020 Indian Comedy-drama film directed by Nicholas Kharkonogar.   Food is the central plot of this movie, the film follows Northeastern Indian migrants in New Delhi, in their attempt to organise a wedding party for one of their friends. The traditional Axone wedding stew turns out to be extremely pungent with local herbs, the friends remain determined to prepare the dish. The movie focuses on the cultural differences, biases and the overarching pressure of being migrants in an unwelcoming city.    Film Review SHAKUNTALA DEVI A Wrestle between Mathematics and Motherhood   “Jab amazing ho sakti hu, to normal kyu banu.” By Varsha Varghese   Anu Menon’s OTT released biopic ‘Shakuntala Devi’ is a lively,  buoyant  and tear-jerking portrayal of the math wizard who always went beyond the lines that society drew for her. Undoubtedly Vidya Balan perfectly portrayed Devi with her thunderous laugh, spontaneous wit and humour-filled killer looks. The  film seems to take an exaggerated tone leaving no room for boredom to sweep in. The movie is split among three facets of  Ms. Devi’s life. The first  one deals with her childhood, where we get glimpse view of her poor brahmin family and her mathematical skills are used for monetary gains by her father. Health and Nutrition Workshop Report by Neha Mustafi Women's Study Centre, Jesus and Mary College conducted a workshop for the first-year members of the society on “Women’s Health and Nutrition” in collaboration with TheaCare, a women’s health companion, working at the intersection of “Fem- tech” (technology for women’s health) and scientific and medical research about women’s health. The workshop was conducted by Swarnima Bhattacharya- Founder Thea Care and the curator the Femme Con- India's first women’s health festival. Swarnima Bhattacharya opened the workshop by mentioning a few facts and figures which reflected the condition of gender- specialized research in the field of medicine and science. “It was only as late as 2003 that the FDA(Food and Drug Administration) made it mandatory for women to be included in medical research and it was only in 1990 that the National Institute of Health, the main body for medical health research made it mandatory for gender to be a ...
